Dec 18 (Day 7) – Holiday Fire Safety 2025 – Kids in the Kitchen (English Descriptive Text)

[Light, playful upbeat music plays in the background as title card appears on-screen saying “KIDS IN THE KITCHEN DURING THE HOLIDAYS”]

[Lisa Walker, Fire Safety Educator standing in her office room surrounded by fire safety public education material.]

Lisa Walter: Kids are curious and they're going to grab whatever they can grab or help,

however they can help.

[video clip of children peeking up over the kitchen island, curious about the food in front of them.]

[Video clip of mother cooking on the stove, while young daughter observes from the side.]

Lisa Walter: And that's why we need to be with our kids when we're in the kitchen.

[Lisa in navy blue cargo uniform, walks toward the camera in slow motion, smiling as she stops right before the camera.]

Lisa Walter: I'm Lisa Walter, Fire Safety Educator with the Stratford Fire Department.

Lisa Walter: Taking the time with your children and showing them maybe what's hot in the kitchen, what's not in the kitchen.

[video clip of young girl rolling out dough on surface with baking flour.]

Lisa Walter: If they do want to help out with cooking or baking, give them little tasks.

[video clip of Lisa demonstrating on a stove, how to place pot handles inwards.]

Lisa Walter: Another thing that I like to encourage for people to remember is turning your handles inwards.

Lisa Walter: So your pots and your pans handles should be pointed towards the back of the stove, and if possible, you want to use the back burner of the stove. I think if once we teach kids, like I said, the sooner the better they'll start remembering, and then they even let us know.

[video clip of hand drawn note by a child, written to the fire department.]

[video clip of Lisa turning the stove top controls to the off position.]

Lisa Walter: Being aware of what we're doing in the kitchen, when we're doing them. And just, you know, to focus on our task in the kitchen is the best advice. I think a tragedy, like a house fire, would be an awful thing to have to live through.

[Title card appears with text that says “A message from the Office of the Fire Marshal and our partners in fire safety. Underneath there are five logos belonging to: The Office of the Fire Marshal, the Ontario Association of Fire Educators, the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs, the Ontario Municipal Fire Prevention Association, and the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council.]
