[cinematic, slow-paced music plays in the background as title card appears on-screen saying “HEATING SOURCES DURING THE HOLIDAYS”]

[video clip of Sean Grech, Public Education Officer of Oakville Fire station walking slowly towards camera, and stops to smile.]

Sean Grech: These calls serve as a real reminder that fire safety starts with you, and that it's everyone's responsibility to make a difference.

My name is Sean Grech. I'm a Public Education Officer with the Oakville Fire Department.

I want to share a story about a real call that our firefighters responded to.

[video clip of fire trucks a fire scene at night time, then smoke appearing over a dark background.]

Sean Grech: The homeowner had reported smoke coming from the basement and spreading throughout the house.

At the time of the incident, two people were asleep upstairs, but thankfully their smoke alarm alerted them and sounded off for them to escape

[video clip of Sean standing in front of red fire truck, where the words “Smoke Alarms Save Lives” is written across the truck side .

Sean Grech: and head outside to their outside meeting place and call 911. When our crews arrived, they found the source of the fire,

[video clip of an extension cord that has been burnt, showing the cause of fire., then a heat lamp with a burnt plug.]

Sean Grech: which was in a home office area, a melted power bar. So it had overheated because a portable heater was plugged into the power bar, drawing more heat than it was rated to handle.

[video clip of person pulling on plug in outlet, then portable heater in a living room.]

Sean Grech: The simplest thing can make all the difference. Always turn off or unplug portable heaters when you leave the room.

Keep anything that can burn at least one meter so three feet away from heating devices.

Check them. Make sure that you're inspecting them, but they're not broken or faulty or defective.

[video clip of Sean closing door of red van vehicle, then fades to black.]

Once that item is tampered with, that's where the fire risk truly lies.

[Title card appears with text that says “A message from the Office of the Fire Marshal and our partners in fire safety. Underneath there are five logos belonging to: The Office of the Fire Marshal, the Ontario Association of Fire Educators, the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs, the Ontario Municipal Fire Prevention Association, and the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council.]
