Dec 22 (Day 11) – Holiday Fire Safety 2025 – Smoking (English Descriptive Text)

[cinematic, slow-paced music plays in the background as title card appears on-screen saying “SMOKING DURING THE HOLIDAYS”]

Jamie Kovacs: It's not going to happen to you? Okay. Have you ever driven down the road and thought, I'll never fall asleep while I'm driving, and you have those 2 or 3 heavy blinks? That's all it takes when you're sitting in your chair to drop that cigarette.

[video clip of Jamie standing in front of red fire truck, walking in slow-motion towards the camera, then smiling.]

My name is Jamie Kovacs, and I’m a Volunteer Firefighter here in Central Elgin at Union Station.

[video clip of close-up of someone smoking, then grass fires, then lbirds-eye view of a arge field fire, then a close-up of a field fire, ]

Jamie: I see cigarette butts being thrown out, windows starting grass fires in the ditch that spread to fields.

[video clip of of close-up of cigarette and ashes spread on surface, then Jamie putting on bunker gear between 2 fire trucks, then Jamie putting on his bunker jacket, then Jamie closing the driver side door of a red fire truck, wearing full fire fighter outfit..]

Jamie: I've seen cases where the cigarette has dropped out of somebody's hands and started a fire on a carpet. I've got statistics galore that it's full of people that passed away that thought it wasn't me.

I need you to wake up and realize that's how easy it can be you. If you're going to have a holiday celebration, you're going to have people over.

It's one thing to say, look, I'm just going to send them outside to smoke.

[video clip of cigarettes being put out in ashtray,]

Jamie: Make sure they have ashtrays. Make sure they have some cans of water. Something to dispose of, that little bit of fire.

It can happen to anybody.

[video clip of close-up of Jamie smiling and talking outside near fire trucks, video fades to black.]
