Narrator: Research has been a fundamental aspect of CPRI’s mission since it was established in 1960. Designed to be a research hub and clinical training centre for professionals, we continue to build evidence-based knowledge and capacity in the child and youth developmental and mental health service sectors.
The importance of clinical research recognized by CPRI and Western University, formerly University of Western Ontario, led to the development of research projects, papers and progress within the sector. One of the key figures influential in our early research was Dr. Murray Barr, the physician who transformed the service sector when he first identified the genes responsible for what we now refer to as developmental disabilities.
CPRI led the development of educational programs in medicine about the classification and diagnosis of developmental disabilities – and was at the forefront of many new advances in research. For example, the Developmental Services Worker Program is now taught at colleges across Ontario and would not exist without the efforts of CPRI.
From the start, research was conducted in conjunction with Western University, Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. The concept of a university-affiliated centre for treatment and research was yet to be developed anywhere.
This unique distinction ultimately led to CPRI receiving bronze and gold awards from the American Psychiatric Association.
Our collaboration with Western University remains today, with CPRI psychiatrists and paediatricians providing training to medical students, including fifth year psychiatry rotations, and in-demand developmental paediatrics rotations. CPRI continues to make significant academic contributions to education and research.
Over the years, several staff have held teaching positions at University and College levels in roles such as Associate and Adjunct Professors, and distinguished appointments such as Department or Division Chair.
